4th Chapter (corrected version)
Women in Libya lead a very restricted life! Some changed their lives. There was a time when it was already bold to have a short haircut as a woman. You should be proud to have LONG hair. Please, it is so hot in Libya… To be honest, sometimes I wished for a bald head… (no joke), but doing that would have been fatal to the mood of my husband… He already had a lot to bear with a woman like me…
There was a time we did not have a ventilator fan in our bedroom. At the very beginning of my stay we were sweating so much that I had to change the pillow case twice a night… At that time we bought two fans– one for the salon and one for our bedroom then it was a little bit better.
The weather during that summer was great; every day we had sunshine. The only rain we had lasted abt 10 minutes. Imagine, In Libya there is a phenomenon, which is called Virga. That is rain which evaporates before reaching the ground; i.e. NO water!
These 10 minutes of rain during that summer was a thunderstorm. For 10 minutes it poured rain as if someone had emptied buckets of water. I have never again seen my husband’s youngest brother, Mohamed, running so fast. Normally he was the laziest of the family, including his brother Nurheddin – the doctor of the family. Nurheddin had studied in Poland and became a liver surgeon. Mohamed studied PCs and had the intention to go to Norway. Yet, since I had been working with DEC and Compaq, he asked me abt the market. I only said: Do you know Linux, Unix, or other huge systems? He replied: No, what is that? Then I was tough with him: Look, Mohamed, if you are not into a special field regarding computers and languages, then you better forget it. Because in Europe it is not enough to “only” know abt PCs. There are enough people taking care of that… He listened to my tip. I was very impressed. One of the men who listened to a woman and especially in AFRICA, in a third world country!! I was so shocked.
Mohamed preferred being half „naked“ he liked to run around in shorts, no shirt, no shoes only his shorts… Salah was then very upset. Ummi and Mufida (Salah’s youngest sister) then said: he is our baby and can do anything… Well, it was not my problem… Mohamed never helped with anything actually. Kitchen, laundry, not even bringing his empty plates, glasses, cups etc. back to the kitchen. He’d leave everything outside the house, even in the street, when having had a coffee with his friends.
It was a pity that Ummi and Mufida would clean up after him. Well, we have a saying in Swiss German: the way they are brought up, the way they will always behave. And that is true! Anyway, Mohamed finally was with IT and it was still a long way to get there! First he wanted to study Economics, then Aviation, and finally he “grabbed” monitor and was there… During his studies in IT he performed best. He was best in class, also. At least that’s something…

Ivee! Thank you so much for sharing this. Your writing and translating are fine - no worries. Whatever mistakes you make are more "adding to the flavor" than anything else. More: I'm starting to get a picture of this place and I can't wait to read more from your journals.
1Thank you Haze! Thank you!
22 B continued
Ivee - Likewise, I am enjoying your stories of your life in Libya!!!
3Thank you v.m. Beachwalker!
4It was, despite of all, still a pleasure, because it added to my personal development...
I can already tell your a beautiful lady by seeing your picture, but you're also amazingly strong, patient and very intelligent. All I can seem to think of is what Friedrich Nietzsche said, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." I look forward to reading your future chapters. Take care, sweetie.
5Thank you Beach Barbie - yes - Nietsche was soooooooooo right. And yes, 2006 and 2007, which will take some time to reach there, will tell ALL. LOL. THANK you so much!
6It would be so difficult to get a good nights rest without any cooling, and changing the pillowcase twice a night must have been annoying. How tired you must have been.
Yes, how we are brought up makes us who we are to be sure. I would really like my boys to be able to cook, clean, wash and iron for themselves. But I admit, sometimes, I "hover".
I think I'll go give the boys some chores just to be sure they aren't in league with Mohamed!
7good idea, dear DB... My kids love to help and be of use... Yet it is not easy all the time... THANK you so much and I was pregnant in addition to the heat... you all know how this feels when you are "twice a person" and my daughter had a heat to give... LOL... Well, even when giving an example, it is good to see bad ones, too. They can still be a good example how NOT to do it... LOL
8I can't even imagine having PMS
(I get seriously moody during that time), in that heat, and
having to deal with picking up Mohamed's coffee cups, while I'm dressed in many layers of clothes and a veil. lol But, I would have done it, & hopefully, I wouldn't have started screaming
at him like a crazy woman.
Can you imagine that...I wonder what happens when you completely
lose your temper there. Do you get in trouble?
9what a question! YES of course you get in DEEEEP trouble... LOL
10Yet, you know, Beach Barbie, it was worth it... You feel better then...
Thank you so much, as written, those were NOT my problems, luckily Mohamed lived with his mommy then... LOL
Iveenia, Wow! You were pregnant during this time. I'm truly impressed with you!
I've never had a
child, but my PMS and period are so bad, I can't even fathom what I would be like pregnant...while trying to make all these different changes in my life...and dealing with all the different
people & the way the they think.
Also, I agree with DB and you, about giving children chores to do...the more independent they are...will really help them out in life, and also, in their relationships with their significant other...husband/wife, girlfriend/boyfriend, significant other. I'm so grateful my husband knows how to cook, do laundry, etc. Also, it's probably really important for the children to see dad helping out around the house.
11Iveenia, thanks for explaining. When I commented before...I didn't get a chance to see your comment, that you were pregnant at the time. Then, I commented again.
Can you give an example of what kind of trouble might happen?
12THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
that - dear Beach Barbie would be before the 2006 / 2007 chapters will show, and sorry, I would spoil those chapters. I know, it is what Beachwalker was blogging abt: Patience... And I did never raise my hands when God was distributing patience - admitted fact LOL... Do not be ashamed! I share your opinion completely... And PMS still happens, not only to us. We are lucky to have it "only" once a month... Men do have it several times a day
BTW: also with men helping in the household, that is a blessing!!! My husband was always working in Switzerland, he did not get the chance of getting a job there. And therefore he was doing my household and was helping with cooking, washing, with all...
13Still, cannot tell too much in advance...
I understand...I'll wait for the next chapters.
I'm cracking up that you said, "And
PMS still happens, not only to us. We are lucky to have it "only" once a month... Men do have it several times a day." That's hilarious! Hahahah!
14Dear Beach Barbie
15You will find the 5th chapter posted... I think I was too tired to send it to all of you... It is now almost 03:00 am and I am still not in bed... Must be the chats with all these men on the web... LOL
T/C and thank you so much!!!
PS: the PMS is true - I can see that with my dad and my bro... And of course with my future ex-husband... In Switzerland we have to wait 2 years - separation time is law... GREAT - so next year I hopefully will be able to divorce...
Thanks for posting the 5th chapter; I just finished reading it. Have a good night's sleep.
16oh, what an interesting family life you had to deal with! How good it would feel to really lay into them and just tell them how insane it all is. thanks
17Dear Sofi
18THANK YOU V.M.
Yes it is/was! It is funny there are two sides of the medal? Is that correct? For me it would be Yin & Yang. We cannot know abt black / white if there was only one of them... So, good goes with evil, as well... It is sad, what will emerge fm the evil side...
Yet, it was necessary in order to be "kicked" firmly and well... LOL That will show in 2007... SMILE five years to go... And, Sofi, you are welcome!
Dear Beach Barbie
19Thank you so much. Sleep for some hours was good... I still would love to sleep some more... the kids are very vivid, so sleeping will be a nice dream, till they are older... At least that is what many mothers told me, i.e. then they will sleep longer, too and be more cautious, not to wake up mommy...
I think if Mohamed is really willing to learn more about IT, he'll make a real effort

20in finding out more and maybe make his career out of it! Your posts about Libya are
so interesting I can't wait to read the others! Thanks for sharing it with us Ivee
